To tackle the burden of obesity, the Cherokee Nation is developing local media strategies to promote healthy food and beverage choices; limiting unhealthy food and beverage availability in schools; implementing farm-to-school programs; adopt quality physical education in schools; increasing safe, attractive, and accessible places for physical activity; adopting procurement and purchasing policies to reduce the price of healthy foods; developing prompts for healthy food and beverage items and implementing menu labeling; reducing the cost of recreation services; and expanding activity groups in workplaces, community gathering places, parks, and neighborhoods.
The Cherokee Nation is addressing the burden of tobacco use by implementing 24/7 tobacco-free policies in various sectors of the community; developing product placement guidelines for Cherokee Nation businesses and a voluntary product placement program for other merchants not operated by the Cherokee Nation; supporting the elimination of free samples of tobacco and price discounts at Cherokee Nation businesses and events; and increasing access to cessation services for students and for patients of Cherokee Nation Health Services and area Indian Health Services.
