------------------------------

The obesity prevention initiative is working to promote safe and active transit (bicycling and walking) through adoption of Complete Streets and Safe Routes to Schools policies designed to create inviting and livable communities. The initiative is also promoting the decreased consumption of sugar-drinks through expansion of the Rethink Your Drink campaign. The Rethink Your Drink Campaign is designed to move people's focus from high calorie sodas and fruit drinks as beverage choices to healthier alternatives such as water, milk, or 100% fruit juice beverages. Another component of the obesity initiative is improved access to healthy foods through food and beverage policies. The Santa Clara County Public Health Department is collaborating with both public and private sector stakeholders in an effort to help develop policies that will provide more opportunities for healthier eating. The impact of this initiative will move the county closer to being a model community of healthy living.

Santa Clara County's Tobacco Prevention and Control Program is using media and other educational strategies to counter pro-tobacco influences, support the establishment of local tobacco retail licensing requirements, limit tobacco advertising near schools, support evidence-based pricing strategies to deter tobacco use, and build greater capacity for smoking cession services. The program also includes focused efforts on populations that smoke in disproportionately high numbers and suffer disproportionately from the burdens of chronic disease.

Learn More About CDC’s “Healthy Schools” Initiative

Research shows that when students eat healthy and are more physically active, they do better in school. With the help of CDC, communities nationwide are putting this research into practice, year-round.

Learn more about what communities are doing to help schools become places where students not only learn about the importance of eating healthier and being more physically active but, in fact, eat healthier and move more.
