Have you ever wondered what exactly cholesterol is, or how your cholesterol levels impact your health? You’re in luck, September is National Cholesterol Education Month a good time to learn about lipid profiles and about food and lifestyle choices that help you reach personal cholesterol goals.

Did you know?

  • Even children and adolescents can have high cholesterol. High cholesterol can develop in early childhood and adolescence, and your risk increases as your weight increases.
  • People with high total cholesterol have approximately twice the risk of heart disease as people with optimal levels. Find out where you stand. Adults should have their cholesterol levels checked once every five years.
  • Risk factors include obesity, smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, and family history of high cholesterol or coronary heart disease.
  • Maintaining a healthy weight through exercise and a low-fat and high-fiber diet can help lower your risk.

The National Cholesterol Education Program has developed specific recommendations about cholesterol treatment for people at increased risk, such as those with a family history of high cholesterol or heart disease. Take some time this September to learn about cholesterol and what it means for your health.

Learn More About CDC’s “Healthy Schools” Initiative

Research shows that when students eat healthy and are more physically active, they do better in school. With the help of CDC, communities nationwide are putting this research into practice, year-round.

Learn more about what communities are doing to help schools become places where students not only learn about the importance of eating healthier and being more physically active but, in fact, eat healthier and move more.
