January 12, 2013 is the Grand Opening date for Pinellas County's newest farmers market, the Clearwater Gateway Farmers Market located in the 1200 block of Cleveland Street in Clearwater, Florida. The market came about as a result of the formation of the Gateway Farmers Market Steering Committee, after it was noticed that the community lacked in fresh produce availability to low income residents in the East Gateway area. The Pinellas County Communities Putting Prevention to Work Program (CPPW) was instrumental in raising awareness in the area of the importance of access to fresh produce and is one of the core sponsors of the market. In Pinellas County approximately two-thirds of adult residents are overweight or obese. The market's vision is to become a vibrant community gathering place where people will discover the diversity of cultures, while providing access to healthy, high quality, affordable and culturally-diverse food. The market will be open on Saturdays from October through May. The hours are 9:00 am - 2:00 pm. Check out the website for more info: myclearwatermarket.com
