Get Outside during National Great Outdoors Month!

This month, join the National Wildlife Federation and the American Hiking Society to observe National Great Outdoors Month. Having opened with National Trails Day on June 2, the goal of National Great Outdoors Month is to introduce people to the health benefits of America's 200,000 miles of trails. This month, families and communities across the country are getting outside to experience the benefits of active fun in nature.

With school out, summer is a great time of year to encourage kids to access the natural world for recreation, education, exploration, inspiration, and much more. Get moving with some of these active ideas:

  • Find a local trail for a hike
  • Walk or jog through a park
  • Go camping with your family
  • Canoe, kayak, or swim
  • Play an outdoor game with your neighbors

Being physically active is a great way to control your weight, reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease, and reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes. Being physically active outside also provides a wonderful opportunity to spend time with your family and friends. Find an event near you and encourage your community to play outside this month.
