Preschool providers attending the Early Childhood Conference "Get Movement Into Your Classroom and Add Sizzle to Your Circle" held at St. Petersburg College on Saturday, August 18 received a bonus gift. In the breakout session taught by Eileen Hodges of the Early Learning Coalition, they received the Sesame Street Healthy Habits for Life curriculum. "25% of the United States population ages 2-17 are obese. And 86% of them become this way before the age of six. We have to start reaching them earlier," emphasized Hodges in her presentation.
Sesame Street is going to make sure they do it in a fun way. The curriculum is full of hands on activities and contains a DVD, a child resource binder, a storybook and colorful posters. There are group poems and songs, easy to understand handouts and even family newsletters for the various sessions.
The preschool providers practiced "shaking their sillies out" as part of the workshop. The curriculum contains many fun physical activities for small children in its "Get Moving" section. There are also sections on healthy food, and how to live every day as a "healthy day." This curriculum is easy to use, fun, and will be a great support to those working with young children to help get them on the road to healthy lifestyles early.
The Did You Know? sections throughout the curriculum give the providers excellent and practical information they can use to successfully work with the kids. Who knew that a child may have to try something 10 times before he accepts it? Many parents give up after a couple of tries! There is hope for broccoli and spinach after all!
Thanks to Sesame Street and CPPW for making the curriculum available to our Pinellas providers. Big Bird and his pals are going to make a huge difference in the quality of the lives of our youngest residents!
