According to the World Stroke Organization (WSO), one in six people worldwide will have a stroke in their lifetime. But it’s not just the “one” who is affected by stroke. Stroke impacts the lives of caregivers, family and close friends– those on the frontlines providing supportive care- since recovery can take months or years.

Join us on World Stroke Day as we promote stroke awareness and provide education and support for stroke survivors and their families. Did you know?

  • Strokes can happen at any time, not just later in life
  • Tobacco use, alcohol use, and physical inactivity can increase your chance of stroke
  • High blood cholesterol can build up fatty deposits on blood vessel walls, which can block blood flow to the brain, causing a stroke. Diet, exercise, and family history affect blood cholesterol levels.
  • You can help prevent stroke by making healthy choices and managing any medical conditions you may have

The WSO leads the global fight against stroke, providing access to stroke care and promoting stroke research and education to improve the care of stroke survivors. For more information about stroke prevention programs around the country, visit http://www.cdc.gov/stroke/cdc_addresses.htm.

Learn More About CDC’s “Healthy Schools” Initiative

Research shows that when students eat healthy and are more physically active, they do better in school. With the help of CDC, communities nationwide are putting this research into practice, year-round.

Learn more about what communities are doing to help schools become places where students not only learn about the importance of eating healthier and being more physically active but, in fact, eat healthier and move more.
